Does a 20 meter USB-C to HDMI cable exist?

Yes. A 20-meter USB-C to HDMI cable exists as a passive copper product carrying 4K@60Hz. Standard passive USB-C video cables stop working after 3-5 meters, and previous long-reach options were either active optical fiber cables (AOC) priced at $80-$200 or HDMI extender boxes. The Farreach TBT103 is one example of a 20m passive copper USB-C to HDMI cable.

Is a 20m USB-C to HDMI cable passive or active?

In a design like the TBT103, the 20-meter cable path is passive copper: shielded twisted pairs carry the signal with no repeaters, no external power, and no active optics along the run. The only semiconductor is a conversion IC housed inside the HDMI connector shell, which converts the USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode signal to HDMI.

What resolution does a 20m USB-C to HDMI cable support?

A 20-meter passive copper USB-C to HDMI cable supports 4K@60Hz (18Gbps-class HDMI 2.0 bandwidth). HDMI 2.1 resolutions such as 4K@120Hz are not achievable at 20 meters over copper in this cable class.

Which is better at 20 meters: copper USB-C to HDMI or fiber optic AOC?

Copper is more durable, has a normal bend radius, is not directional, and costs less; fiber AOC is lighter and immune to EMI but is fragile at the connectors and typically costs $80-$200+. For conference rooms, classrooms, signage and rental AV where the cable is bent, pulled or repeatedly installed, passive copper is the more reliable choice at 20 meters.

Why do normal passive USB-C video cables stop at 3-5 meters?

USB-C video uses DisplayPort Alt Mode, which transmits multi-gigabit differential pairs. Signal attenuation on copper rises sharply with length and frequency, so consumer-grade passive cables degrade beyond roughly 3-5 meters at 4K. Extending the reach requires either heavier shielded conductors and controlled impedance along the run, or conversion of the signal at the connector.

Does a USB-C to HDMI cable need external power?

A passive copper USB-C to HDMI cable does not need external power. The conversion IC inside the HDMI connector is powered from the USB-C connection, so the cable works plug-and-play with laptops, tablets and phones that support DisplayPort Alt Mode.
